About Högbo Bruk
The history of how a simple technique laid the
foundation for Högbo Bruk. Högbo Bruk is a unique combination of
nature, activities, and cultural history.
The estates, the red rows of houses, the smith cabins, the mill,
the stables, and the park, give Högbo a special character and
feeling of the past. Ironwork has old roots. The development of the
factory started in the middle of the 17th
century.
In the year 1858, Högbo's owner Consul
Göran Fredrik Göransson and his colleagues
succeeded in becoming first in the world to develop the Bessemer
technique on an industrial scale. In short, the technique involved
blowing air through the iron to clean it from carbon residue. In
1862, the steel production was moved to a sandy
bay on Lake Storsjön, nearby the new railroad. This laid the
groundwork for the town of Sandviken, as well as to the company
Sandvik. What once began with a simple technique has now become one
of Sweden's largest export companies, with its head quarters in
Sandviken.
