From asphalt to trail: your guide to MTB at Högbo

Mountain biking looks harder than it is. The first obstacle isn't the technique—it's taking the step from thought to action. If you're an experienced road or gravel cyclist, you're already halfway there. You'll learn the rest at Högbo.

Högbo MTB Arena in Sandviken is an official Vasaloppet Center with blue, red, and black trails. This means the facility meets high standards—and that as a beginner, you will encounter well-maintained, clearly marked trails.

What is the difference between MTB and regular cycling?

Mountain biking is about riding on trails: roots, rocks, hills, and narrow paths. It requires a different body position (lower center of gravity, slightly bent arms) and a different mindset: you read the ground in front of you rather than looking straight ahead.

The good news: you don't need to be an athlete. You just need to be curious.

Step 1: Choose the right bike

If you don't have an MTB, you can rent one at Sportcentralen at Högbo. The rental shop is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the bikes are serviced after every rental day. The staff will help you find the right size.

Buying your own bike? For beginners, a simple hardtail (front suspension, no rear) in the 5,000–10,000 SEK range is perfect for Högbo's blue trails.

Step 2: Start on a blue trail

Högbo uses the international system: blue = beginner, red = intermediate, black = advanced. As a beginner, you start on blue—regardless of how skilled you think you are. The feeling of completing an entire trail without having to put a foot down is invaluable for your motivation.

Use the trailhead map to find the right starting point. There are four trailheads plus a skills area.

Step 3: Book a lesson and skip the most common mistakes

Most beginners learn 80% of the basics in a couple of hours with an instructor. Högbo's private lessons are tailored to your level and focus on:

•      Basic position and balance

•      How to brake correctly (rear brake for control, front brake for stopping)

•      Handling roots and rocks without losing unnecessary momentum

•      Descending without tensing your shoulders

Step 4: Combine with an overnight stay

It takes about a day to really get the hang of it. Book Högbo's MTB package and stay the night. You’ll stay right next to the Stadion start area, enjoy a four-course dinner, and ride again the next morning — that’s when it all clicks.
